Horse Guard is the most highly concentrated equine vitamin-mineral supplement on the market today. A mere two ounces a day ensures your horse will get all the critical nutrients typically missing from hay – including 3 mg. of organic selenium.
Vibrant health is the result of many things, nutrition being the cornerstone. Horses, unlike humans, have very limited food sources – most of which are from the local area. Because of this they are much more prone to deficiencies caused by the deficiency in local soils and by the loss of vitamin content with feed storage.
Reformulated to included 1,500 IU of Vitamin E per dose!
Feed 2 oz per day,per 1,000 lbs. (Scoop included in Bag)
A 10 lb. bag of Horse Guard is an 80 Day Supply for a 1,000 lb horse
A 40 lb. bag of Horse Guard is a 320 Day Supply for a 1,000 lb. horse
A complete vitamin-mineral supplement helps to ensures complete nutrition and provides for all body functions.
Why is Selenium Important?
Selenium has several roles in horse health, but the most well-known is as a key element in antioxidant defense, which makes it important in every cell in the body as well as in immune defense.
The body produces radical oxygen metabolites (ROM) as a normal consequence of oxygen metabolism. Selenium-requiring enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) neutralize ROM, rendering them harmless and protecting cellular machinery from damage.
Other basic processes requiring selenium for normal function include growth, disease defense and reproduction. Selenium-supplemented foals are known to grow better than Se-deficient foals, possible because a Se-dependent enzyme is needed to activate thyroid hormone.
In addition, both males and females require selenium for reproductive function.
Exercise increases oxidative metabolism markedly, which results in mobilization of tissue selenium to meet increased antioxidant demand. This explains why performances horses and human athletes have greater selenium needs than non-athletes.
Is Organic Selenium more or less toxic than inorganic selenium?
Although more digestible than inorganic selenium, organic selenium is actually much safer to both horses and humans. The organic selenium compounds that plants and yeast produce are nature’s way of providing a potentially toxic element in a safe form. Selenoamino acids are absorbed from the gut via amino acid pathways, which necessarily limits excessive uptake.
In contrast, inorganic selenium (selenite) is passively absorbed, which allows rapid and unregulated uptake of toxic levels of selenium. Organic Selenium is also much safer to handle by those mixing feeds. Sodium selenite is extremely toxic because it is absorbed through the skin. In contrast, the compounds of organic selenium are not absorbed on contact, which increases safety against the most common selenium toxicity problem: exposure to human skin.
Feeding Horse Guard to a Cushings Horse
The goal is to build a diet for your horse that is low in NSC. Choose hay that best suits your horse’s needs. For a horse that has a hard time maintaining weight, feed a warm-season grass/alfalfa hay mix. A heavier horse will do better on warm-season grass hay.

Great supplement
I bought horde guard almost 2 months ago after buying my 7 yrs old quarter horse gelding because the previous owner told me he was always on it, he doesn’t get grain at all, he loves his supplement pellets all by themselves in addition to the hay, he looks amazing! Coat is shinny, over all super healthy

Suppliments missing minerals
I bought this primarily for my 20yo QH mare who was licking the ground. I knew this meant some mineral was missing in her diet. I have used this for about 10 days now. After about 2 days, I noticed no more ground licking. Her coat is also looking a bit thicker already and her hooves have a thin line of new growth. I plan on keeping her and my other mare on it permanently. Small price to pay for peace of mind, knowing I’m doing all I can for them to be with me a long time and be healthy, too.Update 3/20/18: I am seeing a big difference in my mares coat, hooves and overall health. This supplement is worth every penny. Very happy with all the positive changes in my horses and my mares love the taste, even my picky eater gobbles it up! They think it’s a treat rather than a vitamin. I’m sold and they will be on this for life!

Has really improved my horses overall condition
My 16-year old WB / TB cross lost a ton of weight and body condition in her first 7 months in Texas, after moving from Southern California. I contribute the weight loss to change in weather, and the first barn I had her at simply wasn’t feeding her enough. She is shod only in the front, and her back feet started falling apart to the point where I considered putting shoes on the back. I moved her to a new barn, added Horse Guard and Nutrena Empower Boost to her diet, and the results have been incredible. Her coat is shinier, she’s put weight on, her hooves are so strong that I’m considering taking her front shoes off, and, she is happy! I think her progress was a combination of things but I will definitely not be taking her off of horse guard. I highly recommend!

I Highly recommend Horse Guard supplements
I started feeding this product about one year ago and never looked back. The over all health of my horses has improved better than I could have imagined. It has all they need of vitamins &minerals with organic selenium , and probiotics , prebiotics. I do not feed grain I feed alfalfa and coastal hay. They get this supplement once per day with free choice salt and water. They are the picture of health and I am so happy.

The only supplement I use
I have used Horse Guard for nearly 20 years! My horses have always done very well on it. They eat it readily, even if given by itself. My current horse gets just Horseguard and a handful of oats with his hay. He looks great! I’ve never had a vitamin/mineral issue while using this supplement.

Underwhelmed
On two different occasions I have tried my horses on HorseGuard’s vitamin and mineral supplement. It’s a local product for me and a lot of people feed it and really rate it. Both times I have switched to it from a cheaper product. And both times, I had horses that were just kind of “meh” looking coming out of winter (reduced dappling, duller coat) after having been on it for several months. I then used FeedXL and vet tests to see if this product was even what was best for my feed program. There were several deficiencies found. It might work well for some if the holes in your feed program are able to be patched with this product. It wasn’t enough for my two horses. Both horses, one fairly picky, did eat it. And the price was decent. You definitely get the most bang for your buck with the larger 40 pound bag if you have more than one horse you’re feeding it to.I feel like having tried it twice and having been underwhelmed by the results I saw twice, I have given it a fair go. It just was not what worked well for us.

BIG MISTAKE
AFter four consecutive months of using this product on my 4 horses I am not satisfied. I regularly test my horses to see they are getting what they need. the two mares I sampled after being on this product for four months I had both mares show low vit. e and both are off on the cobalt to zinc ratio causing other health issues. They had no skin issues prior to this after testing I now know this is why. I will return to doing it myself to ensure their health. I did this as I went to surgery and had kids doing my work I thought this would be safer than having them do it. Clearly it’s not.money wasted and I will have to pay a nutritionist to re-balance my horses properly. though some values were ok these were not and are critical

High Quality Product that is essential to daily care – for the right price
We feed Horse Guard Vitamin Supplement to all of our horses. This supplement is essential to the daily needs of every horse. It’s essential to hoof rehab and vitamin deficiencies scene from neglect. We also feed this as a regular supplement to maintain a strong balance of nutrients. As a rescue that regularly has 10-15 horses in rehab we rely on the consistency of the product and the price from Horse Guard. We’ve found that a 10lb bag is the same price in local feed stores as it is on Amazon (w/Prime we get free shipping). We (and many other horse rescues) feed this daily.

Great for my older gelding
Really helps my 26 year old quarter horse. He’s any easy keeper but did need some vitamins because of his age. He loves them. Okay he loves food, but he readily accepted them. He has gained back some of his vitality and nice shine to his coat. People don’t believe he’s 26 years old when they see him.

Great supplement
My 30 year old mini horse is thriving on this formula. For many years we used another brand which is no longer available, and we worried whether our old boy would accept the change. He loves this stuff. The pellets hold together well and don’t leave a powdery residue in the bottom of the bag.

This stuff is great!
My gelding has slimmed out very nicely, along with an addition of some alfalfa in his diet. Just needed to add some molasses for the first couple feedings, now he’ll eat it by itself. Love that it’s concentrated enough that I don’t have to worry about feeding at an exact time each day!

I adopted a 5 yr old ottb and put him on this immediately. I have had him 6 mo. and with good exercise and nutrition he has muscled up and actually grew 1 3/4 in. His coat is the best in the barn. He has good feet to begin with but now they are even better.

Nice, effective product and horses readily eat the pellets
Purchased this after having a selenium deficient horse that also could benefit from other vitamins and minerals in his diet. It proved out as being effective (based on the selenium tests before and after it’s use). I also like that it’s easy to feed by itself and/or with a grain or other treat as the pellets are palatable by the horses so they don’t try to avoid or pick through them.
